A short walk from Montmartre is one of the world’s largest flea markets. Situated just across the northern periphery, Paris’ world renowned Marché aux Puces is a veritable treasure trove of bargains and antiques.

Known to everyone as Les Puces (the fleas), the markets cover a massive seven hectares. Claimed by many to be the largest antique market, the massive collection of markets attracts on average between 120,000 and 180,000 visitors each weekend.

A short hop under the motorway that circles Paris and you enter a world of second-hand bargain hunting. Ranging from evidently knock-off sportswear to bric-a-brac, historical postcards and books to centuries old luxury clothing; the enormous market has something to peak any interest. There isn’t enough time in the markets opening hours to visit all of its 1,700 stalls, so plan your time wisely.

The labyrinth of old and new markets blend into one another, as you pass outdoor wares are sold on sheets on the floor into veritable shops selling vintage collectors items. Many of the more noted dealers are only available to meet with an appointment. So, if you’re looking for something especially rare, it’s best to do your research beforehand.

How to get there?

The closest metro station to the market is Porte de Clignancourt on Ligne 4. A number of buses also stop at Porte de Clignancourt hub, including the 85, 137,166 255 and 341. The Paris tram line 3b also stops close and the stop is named after the market (Porte de Clignancourt – Puces de Saint-Ouen). From there its a two minute walk under the bridge.

Unfortunately, as a major tourist attraction situated in an impoverished neighbourhood, pickpockets are very active in the area.

Les Puces are only open from Saturday to Monday and many of the stores close for lunch, so factor that into your visit.

The market’s opening times are:

Saturday from 9h – 18h
Sunday from 10h to 18h
Monday from 11h to 17h
