The Eiffel Tower is typically the first port of call for tourists arriving in Paris. For the prepared traveler, Montmartre is usually second on the list. Fortunately, the journey between the Eiffel Tower and the Sacre-Coeur is a short one and can be done with the metro, bus, bicycle, or even on foot.

Metro

There are two main metro stations which serve the Eiffel Tower; Bir Hakeim and Trocadero. If you’re looking for that famous panoramic shot with the tower in the background, you’ll want to get off at Trocadero! Both stations are on the metro line 6, which terminates nearby at Charles de Gaulle – Étoile.

To use the line 6 to go to Montmartre, take it from either station towards Charles de Gaulle – Étoile and change to the line 2. The line 2 runs directly through the 17th arrondissement into the 18th. In only 6 stops you reach Place de Clichy, the first of 4 Montmartre stations on the line 2.

The line 2 also stops at Blanche (for the Moulin Rouge), Pigalle and Anvers (for the Sacré-Cœur). The journey from Trocadero to Place de Clichy, including the change, is only 20 minutes long.

Bus

If you’d prefer to take the bus from the Eiffel Tower to Montmartre, there is a direct option! The number 30 bus runs directly from in front of the tower to Pigalle.

Stopping at the Arc de Triumph on the way, it runs from 7am to 10:30pm and also stops at Place de Clichy and Blanche before arriving at Pigalle. Although you will not have to to change buses, it will likely take twice the amount of the time as the metro owning to traffic.

Taxi/Uber

Owing to the heavy traffic in Paris, it’s difficult to say how long most car journeys take. However, an average journey between the Eiffel Tower can take between 18 and 40 minutes. Uber is still a considerably cheaper option than Parisian taxis.

Bicycle

Renting a bicycle is a good way to see the city. Paris has a public bicycle system and an extensive number of bike lanes to facilitate bicycle journeys. On bike, the journey between the Eiffel Tower ans Montmartre will take just over half an hour.

Walking

For the walkers, the distance between the Eiffel Tower and Montmartre is 5.5km (3.4 miles). Google estimates this to be a 1hr and 15 minute brisk walk. However, it’s a walk that takes you along the Seine, past the Louvre and the Opera. So, not bad a stroll, really!
