Gare du Nord is Europe’s busiest train station and the entry point for many travellers into France. It’s the final destination for the Eurostar train from London and international trains from across Western Europe. It is also the connection for the RER B train to both Charles de Gaulle and Orly airports. If your trip to Paris calls for a stop in Montmartre, Gare du Nord is in very close proximity and can be easily reached by train, bus and even on foot.

Here’s how to get from Gare du Nord from Montmartre.

Train

Gare du Nord connects to multiple domestic train lines and the Paris metro. The quickest way to get to Montmartre from the station is by using the metro. If you’ve taken the REB B from either airport, you will see signs for the metro line 2 after alighting the train. If you arrive from the Eurostar, you will need to descend the stairs into the underground metro area.

The blue metro line 2 is attached to the station, but requires a 5 minute walk through an underpass to reach it. The line 2 station La Chapelle is where Gare du Nord connects to the Paris metro.

At La Chapelle the line 2 is actually a monorail and you will need to mount stairs to get to the platform. From La Chapelle, take the 2 in the direction of Porte Dauphine. Montmartre is only 2 stops away, less than 5 minutes away. There are four stations in the area that stop on the line 2: Anvers, Pigalle, Blanche and Place de Clichy.

If you are staying in the northern area of Montmartre, you can change to the line 12 at Pigalle. The line 12 will take you to Montmartre’s other stations: Abbesses, Lamarck — Caulaincourt and Jules Joffrin.

Bus

Gare du Nord is less than 2km away from Montmartre. Accordingly, the bus is also a convenient option. The number 54 bus leaves from the front of the station and runs directly along the same route as the line 2. It also makes stops at Anvers, Pigalle, Blanche and Place de Clichy.

If you are arriving late at night, there is also a night bus service which runs from Gare du Nord to Montmartre. Both the N01 and N02 buses cover the same route throughout the night.

Both buses, during the day and night, cost the price of a single ticket, 1.90€.

Taxi

It can be quicker to walk to Montmartre than wait for a cab at the taxi rank outside the station. However, if you’re fortunate enough to get one, you can expect to pay anywhere between 9€-12€.

Walking

If you’re without luggage or on a budget, you can get to Gare du Nord from Montmartre in is less than a 20 minute walk.

The fastest route is to take a right outside of the station on to Rue Dunkerque. Follow the street until its end and you will arrive at Anvers.
