The old adage that the French are always on strike might be a slight exaggeration, but industrial action is certainly more common in France than most European countries. It’s not unusual to be faced with train and plane delays or even cancellations, due to a worker’s strike.

For the unsuspecting tourist, unfamiliar with the Parisian transport network, this can naturally cause distress. If you have a flight out of Paris that may be jeopardised by strikes, there are still a number of ways to make it to the airport on time.

Le Bus Direct

The RER B train is the easiest way to and from CDG airport. However, during strikes, the RER network is usually one of the services compromised.

The cheapest option to avoid unreliable or unavailable public transport is Le Bus Direct. An independent bus service, provided by Paris’ airports, Le Bus Direct offer a number of routes and pick up and is committed to running through strikes.

Le Bus Direct 2

Le Bus Direct 2 runs from the Eiffel Tower and picks up at the Champs-Élysées and Porte Maillot on route to CDG. The bus will drop passengers off at Either Terminal 1 or 2.

Le Bus Direct 4

Le Bus Direct 4 runs from the south and eastern parts of the city. It starts its journey at Gare Montparnasse, calling at Gare de Lyon, before heading to CDG Terminal 1 and 2.

Prices

Le Bus Direct is a comfortable, air-conditioned coach with wi-fi, so a nicer experience than the Paris metro too!

To reach Terminal 3, there is a short path from the Terminal 1 stop.

The tickets for the 2 and the 4 are the same:

  • €18 for an adult single and €31 for the return
  • €10 for children between 4-11. Children under 4 can travel for free.
  • €13 for a ticket as part of a group.

The journey to CDG takes between 30 and 60 minutes, so allow for plenty of time during strikes!

You can buy tickets on the bus or also online in advance.

Taxi

Taxis are also a reliable option. While they may be a more expensive alternative for a solo traveler, if you’re in a group (or a hurry) a taxi might be your best option. Paris has a fixed flat rate for taxis to and from its airports which depends on where in the city you are travelling to or from.

Price

If you are travelling between CDG and the ‘right bank’ (north of the River Seine) of the city, the price is €53.

If you are travelling south of the Seine to the ‘left bank’, the flat fee is €58.

Many illegal taxis operate from CDG and should always be avoided. An official taxi driver will never approach you at the exit to ask if you need a taxi. Official taxis are in the official taxi car park and have light up. signs and official license plates. Taking an unlicensed taxi could cost you a lot more money, so avoid them at all costs.
